Thunder Hole

A Maine Landmark, Thunder Hole is more than about thunder. The tour of Acadia National Park means you must visit this place, too. With stunning views all around it, especially the rocks carved out on both sides of the inlet. 

If you want to experience the mighty thunders, then it’s best to go during high tides or two hours before high tides. You’ll also experience the beauty of extreme crashing waves. The waves can reach up to 40 feet, so be prepared to get wet. Also, if there are no high tides, the place is wonderful, simply on its own, with gorgeous views. You can also enjoy the terrific views of Sand Beach and Otter Cliff from this place as well. 

You will also find a small parking lot in the area. There is also wheelchair-accessible parking that is reserved for those in need. You can spot that by the wheelchair-accessible sign. Also, you can find two restrooms there that are unisex and wheelchair friendly. It’s best to visit this place off-season because there will be fewer crowds. 

On the left side of the parking lot, walk for a little bit and you’ll find the entrance to a ramp down that leads to the upper viewing deck for Thunder Hole. On the left of the ramp, you will find two additional staircases that lead to the viewing deck. From this deck, you will find beautiful views of the rocky coastline and the complex rock formation of Thunder Hole. For a more detailed view of the “hole,” you can walk down the 55-step-long stairway leading to a lower viewing area. 

If you want to take pictures, then it’s best to take them before noon. Because Thunder Hole faces East, and the sun will be shining at the chute. After noon, the sun is behind the parking lot, and the pictures will not be very lively and colorful. You can take in the beauty of the area and its fresh air. Also, bring food with you and enjoy your little picnic for an unforgettable experience. Lastly, there is also a cute little Thunder Hole gift shop in the area to bring souvenirs with you. It also offers refreshing snacks and coffee.
