Description
The immersive Saint John Walking Tour is curated for guests to discover the charm of Saint John, New Brunswick. This immersive 2.5-hour walking tour blends local history, cultural landmarks, and scenic waterfront strolls—all led by a knowledgeable local guide.
Your journey begins outside the vibrant Container Village where your local guide will meet you. The Container Village is a hub of local creativity and activity. From here, you’ll walk towards the historic Three Sisters Lamp which is a Victorian-era navigation beacon originally lit in 1877. These three red gas lamps were made to guide sea captains safely into the harbor. From Three Sisters Lamp, you'll be able to take in views of the city's seafaring legacy; Partridge Island and the Port of Saint John.
Next, you’ll walk towards the peaceful green space of Queen Square which is lined with tall trees, graceful fountains, and 19th-century homes adding to the serene and peaceful environment of the area. Here, you will also have a glimpse of the city's more refined residential past.
From Queen Square to King Street, the historic feel of Saint John continues, but becomes more modern. King Street is lined with stores and restaurants, it has wonderful statues, a nicely maintained central garden, and the Empire Theatre. Built in 1913, this restored theater is a must-see for its wonderful interiors — stained glass windows and intricate plasterwork, it is one of Saint John’s most popular performing arts venues.
After this, you’ll head to Saint John on the Loyalist Burial Ground, which was created in 1784 as a place of burial for some of the city’s earliest colonists. The cemetery has a lot of older headstones dating back to the late 1700s – and offers an interesting way into the city’s background after the American Revolution.
You will then get onto one of the best Saint John City Market tours. It’s the oldest farmer's market in Canada still operating today. The building dates back to the late 18th century and has an unusual ceiling (resembling ship hulls) for a charming atmosphere in which local vendors sell fresh produce, seafood, baked goods, and crafts.
You’ll finish with a scenic walk along the picturesque Harbour Passage lined with red paths, lookout points, and public art. The path leads to Fort La Tour, a reconstructed fort commemorating more than 5,000 years of Indigenous and colonial trade, conflict, and culture on the site.
This walking tour offers a well-rounded, authentic experience for anyone eager to explore the layered past and present of Saint John.
