Sieur de Monts Spring is a perfect place for a peaceful walk or just enjoying nature. The Wild Gardens in Sieur de Monts are also known as the “heart” of Acadia and consist of a Springhouse and an Abbe Museum. The Wild Gardens are gorgeous with lots of trees, plants, ferns, flowers, and walking paths perfect for hiking.
Sieur de Monts is a title given to Pierre Dugua who was a French explorer. And George B. Dorr named the spring after him. The history of Acadia is nothing short of wonder. First, the Sieur de Monts National Monument was established, and then the monument’s name changed to Lafayette National Park, now known as the famous Acadia National Park.
The Abbe Museum is perfect for understanding the rich Maine’s Native American Culture. It also lets us explore the history and archaeology of the area through many educational programs and exhibitions. It has over 50,000 objects that represent the life of Native Americans.

You would love the quiet and peaceful atmosphere of this place. The gardens are gorgeous there with lush trees and the running spring water is very clear. If you’re into hiking, it’s a great place to be and the hike trails are not very challenging. You will also get to see the deer in that place. Another great thing about the Sieur de Monts is the Nature Center. It serves as a memorial to George Bucknam Dorr, known for his work toward the creation of Acadia National Park. George B. Dorr oversaw the beauty and potential of Mount Desert Island and the need for its conservation, hence the creation of Acadia National Park.
Whatever you see in Sieur de Monts, is explained really well in the Nature Center by Park Rangers. You will also get to know about the formation of mountains, the role of fire, the living beings of the ocean, and whatnot. It’s definitely worth a visit.
From a short walk from there, you will get to see the Sieur de Monts Spring and Wild Gardens of Acadia. You can find the spring under the Spring Canopy, and it was built in the early 1900s. At the springhouse, you’ll find a nearby rock carved with the inscription “Sweet Waters of Acadia”. The Spring is open all year round and is located 2 miles south of Bar Harbor.
Also, you won’t want to miss out on the Abbe Museum. A place representing the rich culture of Native Americans and their history. It has many educational programs and exhibitions for the sole purpose of preserving and celebrating the heritage of all four native communities in Maine. The 50,000 objects in the museum represent the 10,000 years of life of Native Americans in Maine. It’s a nonprofit institution dedicated to preserving the history of the Native Wabanaki in Maine.

The best way to get there is to take the fare-free Island Explorer Shuttle Bus. With the option of pick-up and drop-off, you’ll be able to relax and enjoy your tour. The bus stops at the Sieur de Monts. You can check the bus schedule on their official website for all the routes and timing.
If you’re driving, then you can use the Maine Route 3 from Bar Harbor. Another way of getting there is to follow the Park Loop Road which leads to a one-way road towards Sand Beach. Continue driving along the road for up to 2 miles. Turn right at the signs for Sieur de Monts.

Any time is a great time to visit Sieur de Monts. But many visitors love to visit in summer, preferably from May till September. And if you’re visiting in the Fall, you’ll really enjoy the Fall Rhapsody with tree foliage of various colors which is quite beautiful.
