I’m a US Citizen. Can I visit Niagara Falls, Canada without a Passport?
As you return to the US after visiting Niagara Falls, Canada, you’d be required to provide a US Passport, Passport Card, or Enhanced Driver’s License (for residents of New York, Michigan, Minnesota, Vermont, and Washington), or Trusted Traveler Cards. Is there a toll to cross the Rainbow Bridge between Niagara Falls, USA and Canada?
Crossing the border between Niagara Falls, USA and Canada has a small toll. If you're driving across the Rainbow Bridge, you’ll pay $6.00 USD or $8.50 CAD for cars. If you're walking, the fee is just $1.00 USD or $1.25 CAD.
Pedestrian tolls are paid at a turnstile, and quarters or small change are helpful. Some turnstiles may also accept credit or debit cards, but it’s best to carry cash/coins just in case. For vehicles, tolls are usually collected only when entering Canada, not when returning to the U.S.
Where are the best drop-off and pickup points for walking across the Rainbow Bridge?
If you're planning to walk across the Rainbow Bridge, the best drop-off spot on the U.S. side is at the corner of Prospect Street and Niagara Street in Niagara Falls, New York. From there, it’s a short walk to the pedestrian entrance.
If you’re meeting someone who is walking across from the U.S. into Canada, a convenient pickup spot is near 5827 River Road, Niagara Falls, Ontario. There are stairs and sidewalks that lead directly from the bridge to this area.
What are the hours and traffic conditions like at the Niagara Falls border bridges?
All three Niagara Falls border bridges—Rainbow Bridge, Lewiston-Queenston Bridge, and Whirlpool Bridge—are open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
However, traffic can get heavy during certain times. Expect longer delays on major holidays such as Canada Day (July 1), Independence Day (July 4), and Labor Day weekend. Wait times can stretch to an hour or more, especially in the afternoon and evening.
If you’re a frequent traveler and have a NEXUS card, the Whirlpool Bridge is your best option. It’s restricted to NEXUS members only, which often means faster processing times. Keep in mind that commercial vehicles are not allowed on the Rainbow Bridge.

Can I enter Canada if I have a DUI or a criminal record?
If you have a criminal record, even for a minor offense like a DUI (Driving Under the Influence), you may be denied entry into Canada. Canadian border officers have the authority to refuse entry to anyone with past convictions. This applies no matter how long ago the offense occurred.
Before your trip, check your status or speak with an immigration expert. In some cases, you may be eligible to apply for criminal rehabilitation or a Temporary Resident Permit (TRP). These legal steps can help you enter Canada if you have a record. It’s better to confirm your eligibility ahead of time than to be turned back at the bridge.
Can U.S. Green Card holders visit Canada, and what documents are required?
If you are a U.S. Permanent Resident (also known as a Green Card holder), you are allowed to visit Canada. However, you must carry both your passport and your Green Card when crossing the border.
The passport proves your nationality, and the Green Card proves your U.S. residency. You may also need to check if your home country requires a visa to enter Canada. If so, you must get the visa from a Canadian consulate before your trip.

If a child is traveling with someone who is not their parent or legal guardian, extra care must be taken. A handwritten and signed letter from both parents is required. This letter should clearly state how long the child will be staying in Canada and include contact information for both parents.
In cases where parents are divorced or separated, it’s important to also carry custody papers or legal consent documents. Border officers may ask to see proof of who is allowed to travel with the child.
To avoid any confusion at the border, families traveling in multiple cars should make sure that each child crosses the border in the same vehicle as their parent or guardian.
What documents should I carry when crossing the border with a child?
Carrying the right documents can make the process smooth and stress-free. In addition to a birth certificate or passport, it's a good idea to bring copies of the parents' ID or passports. This gives border agents extra proof and builds trust.
A well-prepared folder with the child's birth certificate, permission letter, custody documents (if needed), and parent ID copies is the safest option. These small steps can prevent delays—or even denied entry—at the border.
How much can I bring back from Canada or the U.S. without paying duty?
When you cross the border between the U.S. and Canada, you can bring back certain goods without paying extra taxes. These are called duty-free exemptions, and they depend on how long you've been away.
If you’ve been gone for less than 24 hours, there’s no exemption—you may have to pay tax on all purchases. After 24 hours, you can bring back CA$200 worth of goods duty-free. If you’ve been away for 48 hours or more, the limit increases to CA$800.
Always keep your receipts and be ready to declare your items at the border. Duty-free shops are also available near the bridges for extra savings.
What should I know about using credit cards and cell phones in Canada?
While cash is accepted, using a credit or debit card is usually the best way to pay. Credit cards often offer better exchange rates than currency booths or shops.
If you’re a U.S. visitor entering Canada, your cell phone might still work for a short distance across the border. But once you’re deeper into Canada, you may face roaming charges. Check with your mobile provider before you go. Many offer temporary Canada plans or daily roaming passes.
Can I bring my pet or prescription medication when crossing the border?
You can bring your dog across the border, but you must carry proof of current vaccinations, especially for rabies. Dogs must be on a leash and cleaned up after. However, be aware that not all hotels allow pets, so check in advance.
If you take prescription medication, make sure it’s in the original pharmacy container. Bring only the amount you need for your visit. Expired or loose pills can raise questions at the border.
