Sand Beach is one of the most beautiful coastal destinations in Acadia National Park, nestled between rocky cliffs and mountains along Maine’s rugged Atlantic shoreline. Despite its name, sandy beaches are relatively rare along this stretch of coast, making Sand Beach a particularly memorable stop. Visitors can relax along the shore, admire the surrounding scenery, or use the beach as a starting point for exploring several nearby trails and coastal attractions.
✨ What to Know
Sand Beach is a small natural beach located on the eastern side of Mount Desert Island. The beach stretches approximately 290 yards between Great Head and the rocky coastline near Newport Cove, with views looking out toward the Atlantic Ocean.
The water remains quite cold even during the summer, so swimming can be chilly. Many visitors instead come to walk along the sand, enjoy the scenery, take photographs, or explore the surrounding coastline. Restrooms and changing facilities are available near the parking area.
📍 How to Get There
Sand Beach is located along Park Loop Road inside Acadia National Park, approximately 6 miles from downtown Bar Harbor. From Bar Harbor, follow signs toward Acadia National Park and the Park Loop Road, then continue toward Sand Beach. The entrance to the beach is clearly marked along the road.
A parking area is located near the beach, but spaces can fill quickly during the busy summer and fall seasons. Visitors can also reach Sand Beach aboard the free Island Explorer bus when seasonal service is operating. From the parking and bus area, a short staircase and pathway lead directly down to the beach.
📖 Best Time to Visit
Sand Beach is especially popular from late spring through fall. Summer offers warmer weather for relaxing on the shore, while September and October bring cooler temperatures, fewer crowds, and beautiful fall scenery throughout Acadia National Park.
For a quieter experience during peak season, consider arriving early in the morning or later in the afternoon. Sunrise and early morning visits can be particularly scenic and make it easier to find parking.
