At the intersection of Queen Street West and Bay Street lies the beloved Nathan Phillips Square, a 4.85-hectare civic space named after the former mayor who championed its creation. This urban paradise was built between 1961 and 1965 as a replacement for the Old City Hall, which had long been a fixture in the area once known as St. John's Ward.
Designed by Finnish architect Viljo Revell and landscape architect Richard Strong, the square boasts a stunning design featuring mature deciduous trees, an elevated walkway, and three impressive "Freedom Arches" crossing a reflecting pool. The southern half of the rectangular parcel is outlined by the walkway and is home to several artworks, including sculptor Henry Moore's "Three-Way Piece No. 2: The Archer." Nearby, an open-air stage and grid of water jets add to the square's allure.
On the northern section of the square lies Revell's City Hall ensemble of curving towers, ensconced within a raised podium.
