History

Niagara Falls has always been a center of tourism in Canada due to its scenic views and several sites of attractions nearby. But the tourists always flocked to this spot only during summer. To solve this issue, the Winter Festival of Lights was founded in 1982 to expand the tourism season to winter. For its premiere season, the winter carnival hosted light shows and illuminating displays that were not too extravagant. It still managed to attract about 250,000 sightseers who came to see the festival in the spirit of the holidays! From that point onwards, the festival went on to grow each year displaying more and more lavish lighting displays, drawing more and more visitors towards the extravaganza until everybody started to see an annual visit here as a mandatory winter tradition.

The coalition between the Niagara Falls Canada Visitor and Convention Bureau (now referred to as Niagara Falls Tourism), the City of Niagara Falls, the Niagara Parks Commission, and several private tourist enterprises, forged over forty years ago bore fruit and today this festival is Canada’s biggest illumination extravaganza and the very first in North America, enticing more than 1 million sightseers each year to behold the sparkling displays of lights in the holiday season! The fact that this festival did so in just 40 years is nothing short of a wonder.
