About High Line
Located on Manhattan's West Side, the High Line is one of New York City's most distinctive attractions, transforming a former elevated freight railway into a beautiful public park above the bustling city streets. Stretching approximately 1.45 miles through the Meatpacking District and Chelsea toward Hudson Yards, this innovative green space combines industrial history, modern landscape design, and breathtaking urban scenery.
Originally constructed in the 1930s to transport freight through Manhattan's industrial neighbourhoods, the railway was eventually abandoned before being reimagined as a public park. The High Line opened its first section in 2009 and has since become a celebrated example of urban revitalization, attracting visitors from around the world.
Today, visitors can stroll along beautifully landscaped pathways surrounded by native plants, seasonal flowers, and thoughtfully designed gardens. The park features rotating public art installations, unique architectural viewpoints, and scenic overlooks offering impressive views of the Hudson River, Manhattan's streets, and the surrounding skyline.
Along the route, visitors can admire the neighbourhood's blend of historic brick buildings, contemporary architecture, art galleries, and cultural landmarks. Popular nearby attractions include Chelsea Market, Little Island, the Whitney Museum of American Art, and the vibrant Hudson Yards development.
Whether you're enjoying a peaceful walk above the city, discovering contemporary art, photographing New York's iconic architecture, or exploring Manhattan's lively West Side, the High Line offers an unforgettable perspective of the city and is an essential stop on any New York City sightseeing adventure.
