Arrive in Negombo
Colombo airport to Negombo, about 10 km
- Welcome dinner
- Stay in Negombo
- Drive about 30 min
Your trip starts at Bandaranaike International Airport (CMB) at Katunayake, the island's main airport. We meet you in the arrivals hall and drive you about 10 km, roughly twenty minutes, to your hotel in Negombo, a fishing town on the west coast where the lagoon meets the Indian Ocean.
Evening
Long-haul flights land at all hours, so nothing is planned before the evening. Sleep, swim, or walk the beach, which faces west, so the sun sets straight over the sea. In the evening your trip leader meets the group for a welcome dinner and a briefing on the days ahead, with every drive time spelled out, so you know how each morning starts before it arrives. Starting next to the airport means no long transfer on the day you land.
Included
- Pick-up at Bandaranaike International Airport (CMB)
- Welcome dinner and trip briefing
Free time: Rest of the day free
Dambulla cave temple
Negombo to Dambulla, then Sigiriya, about 170 km
- Breakfast
- Stay in Sigiriya
- Drive about 4.5 h

Afternoon
After breakfast we head inland, about 150 km and three and a half to four hours on the road, with a coffee stop and lunch on the way so the drive comes in two easy stretches. The coconut country of the west gives way to the rice fields and rock outcrops of the dry zone. In the afternoon we climb the stepped path up the rock at Dambulla to the cave temple, a place of pilgrimage for more than two thousand years and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Five caves hold more than 150 Buddha statues, with painted ceilings that cover almost every surface of the rock. Shoulders and knees covered, shoes off at the door. From the terrace the plain stretches away to Sigiriya Rock on the horizon. Then it is half an hour to your hotel near Sigiriya, home for three nights.
Included
- Dambulla cave temple
- Drive to Sigiriya
Sigiriya at opening, elephants at dusk
Sigiriya Lion Rock, then a jeep safari
- Breakfast
- Stay in Sigiriya

Morning
We are at the Sigiriya gate when it opens, about 7 am, ahead of the heat and the queues that build on the upper stairs from mid-morning. King Kashyapa built his palace on top of this rock in the late fifth century, and the climb, about 1,200 steps, passes the water gardens, the painted women of the frescoes, the polished Mirror Wall and the giant stone paws of the lion gate before the summit, about 180 metres above the plain. You are back at the hotel by late morning to rest through the hottest hours.
Afternoon
In the middle of the afternoon we leave by jeep for an elephant safari in Minneriya, Kaudulla or Hurulu Eco Park, whichever park the herds are using that week, and stay out until the light goes. Jeep and park fees are included.
Included
- Sigiriya Lion Rock at opening, with a local site guide
- Jeep safari in Minneriya, Kaudulla or Hurulu Eco Park, with park fees
Free time: Middle of the day free
Activity: About 1,200 steps on Sigiriya, some narrow and exposed; the guide sets the pace.
Pidurangala sunrise and Polonnaruwa by bike
Pidurangala Rock, then the ruins of Polonnaruwa
- Breakfast
- Stay in Sigiriya
- Drive about 2.5 h

For the best view of Sigiriya you climb the rock next door. We leave before 5:30 am for Pidurangala, past a small temple at its foot and up a forest path, about 30 to 45 minutes to the top, with a short scramble over boulders at the end.
Morning
You watch the sun come up over the forest with Sigiriya Rock in front of you, then walk down for breakfast. Around an hour's drive east, Polonnaruwa was the royal capital in the eleventh and twelfth centuries, and its ruins spread across flat parkland beside the great Parakrama Samudra reservoir. We ride between them on bicycles: the Royal Palace, the circular Vatadage and the Gal Vihara, where four Buddha figures, one of them reclining, are carved from a single granite face.
Afternoon
We are back at Sigiriya by early afternoon, with the rest of the day free.
Included
- Pidurangala Rock at sunrise
- Polonnaruwa ancient city by bicycle, with entry
Easier option: Skip the sunrise climb and sleep in; join the group for Polonnaruwa after breakfast.
Free time: Afternoon free
Activity: Bicycles on flat paths; the vehicle follows, so you can ride as much or as little as you like.
Aluvihare and the Temple of the Tooth
Sigiriya to Kandy, about 95 km
- Breakfast
- Stay in Kandy
- Drive about 3 h

Morning
A late breakfast, then about three hours on the road south into the hills, broken halfway. At Aluvihare, a rock temple near Matale, Buddhist tradition holds that monks first wrote down the teachings of the Buddha on palm leaves in the first century BCE, and you can watch the craft of writing on ola leaves.
Afternoon
We reach Kandy, the last capital of the Sinhalese kings until 1815, in time for lunch.
Evening
In the afternoon, when the morning tour groups have gone, we visit the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic, the most revered Buddhist shrine in the country, beside Kandy Lake, and stay for the evening ceremony of drums and offerings. Wear light clothing that covers shoulders and knees. Your hotel in Kandy is home for two nights.
Included
- Aluvihare rock temple
- Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic, with the evening ceremony
Peradeniya gardens and a free afternoon
Royal Botanic Gardens, then Kandy at your pace
- Breakfast
- Stay in Kandy
- Drive about 30 min
We go early to the Royal Botanic Gardens at Peradeniya, about 6 km from Kandy, soon after the gates open and while the air is cool. The gardens cover about 60 hectares inside a loop of the Mahaweli, the island's longest river, with an avenue of royal palms, an orchid house, a spice garden and a giant Javan fig whose branches shade a whole lawn. Bats hang in the tall trees by the river.
Morning
By late morning we are back in town, and the rest of the day is yours. Walk the path around Kandy Lake, browse the market, or rest at the hotel before tomorrow's journey into tea country.
Evening
Your trip leader can book a Kandyan dance performance or an ayurvedic massage for the evening if you would like one.
Included
- Royal Botanic Gardens, Peradeniya
Optional experiences
- Kandyan dance performance
- Ayurvedic massage
Free time: Afternoon free
Tea country and the hill train to Ella
Kandy to Nanu Oya by road, then the train to Ella
- Breakfast
- Stay in Ella
- Drive about 3 h

Morning
We leave Kandy after an early breakfast and climb by road into tea country, about 85 km and three hours, with stops on the way. The road winds past Ramboda Falls and estates where Tamil tea pickers work the slopes, and we stop at a working tea factory to see how leaf becomes black tea, with a tasting. Tea has grown here since the 1860s, when it replaced coffee after a blight. At Nanu Oya, the station for Nuwara Eliya, we board the train with reserved seats. For about three hours it climbs past Pattipola, the highest station on the line at about 1,900 metres, then runs down through Haputale and Bandarawela, tea on both sides, to Ella. If the train is cancelled, the vehicle drives you instead.
Evening
The evening is free, with three nights in Ella ahead.
Included
- Tea factory visit with tasting
- Reserved seats on the train from Nanu Oya to Ella
Free time: Evening free
Activity: The Kandy to Nanu Oya rail section has been closed since Cyclone Ditwah in November 2025, so we drive that part.
Nine Arch Bridge at dawn and a cooking class
Nine Arch Bridge, Little Adam's Peak, cooking class
- Breakfast and dinner
- Stay in Ella

An early start pays off here. We walk to the Nine Arch Bridge before 7 am, when the valley is still misty and the crowds have not arrived.
Morning
Completed in 1921, the bridge curves across a ravine on stone and brick arches about 24 metres high, and your trip leader will know the morning train times so you can see one cross. Then it is on to Little Adam's Peak, about 45 minutes up a path through tea gardens to a ridge with views down the Ella Gap to the lowlands. You are back for a late breakfast or brunch, and the middle of the day is free.
Afternoon
In the late afternoon a local family teaches you to cook rice and curry: dhal, a vegetable curry, coconut sambol and more, and then you eat what you made together.
Included
- Nine Arch Bridge at dawn
- Little Adam's Peak walk
- Cooking class and dinner with a local family
Free time: Middle of the day free
Activity: Stay back from the bridge edge and off the track; there are no railings.
A free day in the hills
Ella at your pace, or Ella Rock at sunrise
- Breakfast
- Stay in Ella
Today is yours, the first of two full free days on this trip. Ella is a small town in a green gap between the hills, cool after the lowlands, with cafes, a few good walks from the door and very little traffic. Sleep in, read on a balcony above the tea, or book a massage.
Morning
If you want a bigger walk, your trip leader takes an early group up Ella Rock, starting around 5:30 am to reach the top near sunrise, about two to four hours return, part of it along the railway line and through eucalyptus and tea. Go early, as there is little shade by mid-morning. Ravana Falls, by the road a few kilometres south of town, is an easy outing by tuk-tuk.
Evening
Dinner tonight is on your own, and the town has plenty of choice.
Included
- Free day
Optional experiences
- Ayurvedic massage
- Tuk-tuk to Ravana Falls
More active option: Ella Rock at sunrise with your trip leader, about 2 to 4 hours return
Free time: Full day free
Down to the south coast
Ella to Mirissa via the Elephant Transit Home, about 205 km
- Breakfast
- Stay in Mirissa
- Drive about 4.5 h
This is the longest day on the road, about four and a half hours of driving, so we split it in three. From Ella the road drops through the Ella Gap past Ravana Falls and down to the dry lowlands at Wellawaya. About two and a half hours after leaving, we reach the Udawalawe Elephant Transit Home, run by the Department of Wildlife Conservation, which raises orphaned elephant calves and releases them into the wild when they are old enough. We arrive for one of the set feeding times, when the young elephants come in for their milk, and watch from the viewing platform.
Afternoon
After lunch nearby it is about two hours to the coast at Mirissa, a curved beach with a fishing harbour, and home for the last four nights.
Included
- Udawalawe Elephant Transit Home at a feeding time
Free time: Evening free
Whales at dawn, sunset on Coconut Tree Hill
Whale watching from Mirissa harbour
- Breakfast
- Stay in Mirissa
- By boat

Morning
From December to April blue whales, sperm whales and spinner dolphins feed off the deep water south of Mirissa, and this is the morning to look for them. We are at the harbour soon after 6 am to board a smaller boat with fewer passengers than the big tour boats, with a crew that keeps its distance and does not chase the animals. Trips last about three to five hours. Sightings are likely in season but never guaranteed, and if the sea is too rough to go out we try again on day 13.
Afternoon
The afternoon is free for the beach or a nap.
Evening
Near sunset we walk up Coconut Tree Hill, the palm-covered headland at the east end of the bay, and on the way back look for green turtles grazing off the rocks at Turtle Point.
Included
- Whale and dolphin watching on a smaller boat
- Coconut Tree Hill at sunset
Free time: Afternoon free
Activity: Seasickness is common on the open sea; take a tablet before you board if you are prone to it.
Galle Fort at golden hour
Mirissa to Galle, about 35 km each way
- Breakfast
- Stay in Mirissa
- Drive about 1.5 h

Afternoon
A slow morning by the sea, then after lunch we drive about 35 km west along the coast, under an hour, past Weligama Bay and the stilt fishermen at Koggala. Few of them fish from the poles now; most pose for photos in return for a tip, and your trip leader will explain how it works. Galle Fort was first built by the Portuguese in 1588 and greatly expanded by the Dutch from the 1640s, and its walls still enclose a whole town of churches, warehouses, mansions and quiet lanes, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. We walk the old streets with your trip leader, past the Dutch Reformed Church and the lighthouse, then follow the ramparts at golden hour to Flag Rock as the sun goes down over the sea.
Evening
We are back in Mirissa for a late dinner.
Included
- Guided walk of Galle Fort and its ramparts at sunset
Free time: Morning free
Free day on the coast
Mirissa at your pace, farewell dinner
- Breakfast and dinner
- Stay in Mirissa
A full day off before the flight home, and the second free day of the trip. Swim in the calm water at the west end of Mirissa beach, read under a palm, or try a surf lesson in the gentle waves of Weligama Bay, a few kilometres away. Snorkelling, a massage or a tuk-tuk to a quieter beach along the coast can be arranged by your trip leader.
Morning
If rough seas stopped the whale-watching boat on day 11, this morning is our second chance, and it is booked as the backup from the start.
Afternoon
Lunch is up to you, at one of the seafood places along the sand.
Evening
In the evening the group meets for a farewell dinner, with fresh fish from the harbour, to look back over two weeks from the airport to the south coast.
Included
- Farewell dinner
- Whale watching backup morning if day 11 was cancelled
Optional experiences
- Surf lesson in Weligama
- Snorkelling
- Ayurvedic massage
Free time: Full day free
Back to the airport
Mirissa to Bandaranaike International Airport, about 170 km
- Breakfast
- Drive about 3 h
Morning
After breakfast we drive you back to Bandaranaike International Airport (CMB), about three hours on the Southern Expressway, the fast inland road that runs up from the south coast towards Colombo, then the airport expressway north to Katunayake. We time the departure from Mirissa to your flight, with a margin for traffic around Colombo, and the vehicle makes a stop on the way.
Evening
Many long-haul flights leave late in the evening or overnight, so if yours is late, keep your room until midday and spend the morning on the beach; your trip leader will help you arrange a late check-out or a day room where the hotel allows it. If you want to stay longer, in Colombo or on the coast, we can book extra nights before or after the trip.
Included
- Drop-off at Bandaranaike International Airport (CMB)
- Negombo1 night
- Sigiriya3 nights
- Kandy2 nights
- Ella3 nights
- Mirissa4 nights
- Negomboend
- Overnight stop
- Day trip
- By boat or train
Wildlife and weather: December to March is the dry season on the west and south coasts and the best time for the hill country, with warm, sunny days in the lowlands and cool mornings and evenings around Nuwara Eliya and Ella. November and early April can bring scattered showers. Blue whales, sperm whales and spinner dolphins are off Mirissa from about December to April; sightings are never guaranteed. Wild elephants are seen year round in the parks near Sigiriya, gathering in the largest numbers later in the dry season. Around 13 to 15 April, the Sinhala and Tamil New Year, much of the country closes.

Questions
Is the hill country train guaranteed?
We book reserved seats on the train from Nanu Oya to Ella as soon as tickets go on sale for your date. The Kandy to Nanu Oya section has been closed since Cyclone Ditwah in November 2025, so we drive that part. If the train is cancelled on the day, your vehicle drives you to Ella instead.
How long are the drives?
We publish every one. The longest is day 10, Ella to Mirissa, about 4.5 hours split by the Elephant Transit Home and lunch. Days 2, 5, 7 and 14 run about 3 to 4.5 hours with stops. Your driver is briefed to keep a steady, safe speed and stop for breaks.
Is whale watching included, and is it ethical?
Yes, it is in the price. We book a smaller boat with fewer passengers, and a crew that keeps its distance and does not chase the whales. Sightings are likely from December to April but never guaranteed. If the sea is too rough on day 11, we try again on day 13.
What does the price include?
13 nights of hotels, airport transfers, a private air-conditioned vehicle and driver, reserved train seats, every entry on the plan, the elephant safari, whale watching, bicycles at Polonnaruwa, the tea factory, a cooking class, 13 breakfasts and 3 dinners, and a See Sight Tours trip leader throughout.
How early are the mornings?
Some are early on purpose: Pidurangala at sunrise, Sigiriya at opening and the Nine Arch Bridge before 7 am, for cooler air, softer light and fewer people. Each early start is followed by a free afternoon or a late breakfast, and the Pidurangala sunrise is optional.
Where do we stay?
Five bases and no one-night stops after the arrival night: 1 night in Negombo, 3 near Sigiriya, 2 in Kandy, 3 in Ella and 4 on the south coast at Mirissa. We name each hotel when we confirm your dates.
When is the best time to go?
December to March is the dry season for the hills and the west and south coasts, and the whale season off Mirissa. November and early April can bring some showers. We avoid the Sinhala and Tamil New Year around 13 to 15 April, when much of the country closes and transport is scarce.
How big is the group?
The small-group trip runs with 7 to 12 guests.
Can we travel privately or on our own dates?
Yes. Besides the small group, the trip comes as a private trip for your party only, on a date you choose. If you would rather travel on your own on your own dates, ask us from the dates section: we can book the same hotels, train seats, vehicle and driver, and activities for you to travel independently.
How much does it cost?
Prices are per person sharing a room, with taxes, and differ by style: small group or private. The small group starts from CAD 3,670 per person, and a room of your own is from CAD 750 more. Pick your start date when you request to book, and we confirm your trip within 24 hours. Nothing is charged until then.
