Description
Step inside the heart of Texas history on a guided small group walking tour of the Texas State Capitol in downtown Austin. Built from striking pink granite and standing taller than the U.S. Capitol in Washington, D.C., this iconic landmark is one of the state's most recognizable symbols, reflecting Texas's rich history, political heritage, and independent spirit.
Over approximately 1 hour and 30 minutes, explore the Capitol with an expert local guide who brings the stories behind the building to life. Begin outside, where you'll admire the Capitol's impressive façade and learn about its 19th-century origins, distinctive Texas granite, and the architectural features that set it apart from other state capitols across the country.
Before heading inside, take a walk across portions of the Capitol's historic 22-acre grounds and visit the Texas African American History Memorial. Along the way, discover monuments that commemorate the people, cultures, and events that have helped shape Texas through the generations.
After clearing security, enter the Capitol and step beneath the soaring Capitol Dome into the magnificent Rotunda. Surrounded by historic portraits, detailed craftsmanship, and impressive architectural features, you'll gain a deeper understanding of the state's political history and evolving identity.
Continue to the Senate Chamber, where your guide will explain how the Texas Legislature operates and share stories of the debates, decisions, and pivotal moments that have influenced the state. You'll also visit the Capitol Extension, a remarkable underground addition designed to complement the historic building while providing modern legislative space.
Throughout the tour, you'll encounter notable landmarks including the Tejano Monument and the Heroes of the Alamo Monument, each offering insight into the diverse individuals and events that contributed to Texas's story. Whether you're visiting Austin for the first time or looking to gain a deeper appreciation for the Lone Star State, this small group experience provides an engaging look at one of Texas's most important landmarks.
