📖 History

Many people don't know that the Table Rock Centre which now houses the Table Rock House Restaurant was a museum before it turned into the "Table Rock House" in 1853. It got its famous name from the massive slab of rock that jutted out from the peak of the gorge wall which looked out over the Canadian Horseshoe Falls. That slab of rock or "table rock" broke down to some extent in 1818 and it continued to collapse throughout the 19th century.

In 1885, the Queen Victoria Niagara Falls Park Act was passed which meant that the Ontario government would buy all the privately owned properties to demolish them altogether or renovate them as a way to restore the land to a natural state. As the Table Rock House was in a somewhat decent condition and situated in a profitable location, it was preserved to serve as the visitor centre when it would be officially opened to the public on May 24th, 1888.

Even though the centre underwent many renovations under the Ontario Power Company, there was a need to build a new Table Rock House owing to the falls continuing to recede south. As a solution, in 1925 an open contest was held to construct a new building for this observation complex. The chosen champion of the contest, Findlay and Foulis, began to manufacture the new complex later that year, moving it even nearer to the scenic falls.

The new complex was nestled south of the old building and was much more magnificent in scale and amenities (such as dressing rooms and catering). The renovations over the next century included an addition of "Table Rock South" in 1974 which housed a massive dining facility - the site of the famous Table Rock House Restaurant.
