What to Know
Designated a National Historic Place, the basilica is more than two centuries old. But don’t let its age fool you—this space is alive with activity, reflection, and reverence. Renovations have carefully added modern features while preserving the church’s original charm. Beneath the basilica lies a crypt—a solemn and sacred resting place—while outside, a towering brick cemetery wall leans as if bending toward the weight of its own history. Even this wall, with its brownstone accents, tells a story: braced, restored, and preserved with materials salvaged from the past.
How to Get There
From the Holland Tunnel:
Go east on Canal Street, turn left onto Mulberry Street. The church will be on your right just past Prince Street.
From the FDR Drive:
Take the Houston Street exit. Drive about one mile, then turn left onto Mott Street.
From the West Side Highway:
Exit at Canal Street, go east for half a mile, and then turn left onto Mulberry Street.
Subway stations nearby include the B/D/F/M at Broadway-Lafayette, the 6 at Bleecker Street, and the N/R at Prince Street.
Best Time to Visit
For a truly enchanting experience, aim to visit in the fall—late September through early November. As the city is bathed in golds and crimsons, the old cathedral and its surrounding streets feel like something out of a period film. It’s cooler, quieter, and you’ll have room to breathe and reflect without the summer throngs.
But don’t shy away from a spring or summer visit either. On warmer days, the surrounding Nolita neighborhood buzzes with life, and the basilica offers a peaceful escape from the city’s pulse.

History & Fun Facts
- Old St. Patrick's Cathedral NYC predates the more famous midtown St. Patrick’s by over 50 years. In fact, it was the original St. Patrick’s before the archdiocese moved uptown.
- The church’s crypt is one of only a few in Manhattan, and its presence lends the basilica an almost European feel.
- The leaning cemetery wall wasn’t corrected to perfect alignment during restoration—on purpose. Engineers preserved its “characteristic lean,” honoring its weathered, cinematic presence.
- The basilica of st patrick's old cathedral has appeared in numerous movies and TV shows, making it something of a silent actor in NYC’s cultural landscape.
Whether you're lighting a candle in memory, wandering the grounds, or simply soaking in centuries of atmosphere, a visit to Old St. Patrick’s Cathedral NYC is a journey through time. Here, in this quiet corner of Manhattan, history doesn’t just live—it breathes.
